The St. John’s men’s basketball team defeated DePaul 67-47 Sunday for its second conference win of the season.
The Red Storm went on a 14-5 run following a timeout to finish the first half, and picked up the momentum in the second half, leading by as many as 31. Justin Burrell led the way with 11 points, and Anthony Mason Jr. had eight points and 10 rebounds in his third game back.
DePaul has lost 24 consecutive regular season conference games. The Blue Demons’ last regular season win came on Mar. 6, 2008 against Cincinnati. DePaul also defeated Cincinnati in the first round of the Big East Tournament last March at Madison Square Garden.
Sunday’s game was DePaul’’s second since firing coach Jerry Wainwright on Jan. 11, replacing him with Tracy Webster. Wainwright suffered a torn ACL and a fractured tibia in a sideline collision during a game against Villanova earlier in the week.
St. John’s (12-5, 2-3) takes on No. 15 Connecticut Wednesday in Hartford, Conn. DePaul returns home Wednesday for a game against Marquette.

Early in the second half, with his team beginning to stagnate on offense, Hardy knocked down three-pointers on consecutive possessions. A short while later, “Buckets,” as he is known, knocked down another key three to spark another mini comeback.
But it was the free throws Hardy drained late that pushed St. John’s (11-5, 1-3) over the Bearcats (11-6, 2-3), 52-50, the team’s first conference win of the season during an otherwise hard-fought defensive battle. Keep reading →
