The St. John’s men’s soccer team has been given the No. 1 ranking in the 2009 Collegiate Soccer News Preseason Top-30 poll.
The Red Storm went 19-3-3 in 2008 and reached the NCAA College Cup for the fourth time in program history. The team won the regular season Big East championship and led the nation with 16 shutouts last year.
In addition to St. John’s, South Florida (No. 13), Notre Dame (No. 16) and Connecticut (No. 20) were also Big East representatives in the poll.
The defending National Champion Maryland Terrapins, who beat the Red Storm in the semifinal round of the College Cup, were ranked fifth.
