Mason to miss additional three weeks, Roberts to redshirt

Anthony Mason Jr.’s rehab from a hamstring injury will take an extra three weeks to heal and sophomore guard Quincy Roberts will medically redshirt, according to men’s basketball Coach Norm Roberts.

Mason was examined Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, and an ultrasound revealed that his hamstring, injured in early September and reaggravated in October, was not yet fully healed. Roberts originally hoped Mason would return in early January, in time for the start of the Red Storm’s conference schedule.

“We’re disappointed for Anthony, because we know he wants to be out there. We have to give him time to recover so when he joins us on the court, he’ll be 100 percent,” said Roberts. “We’ll obviously be very happy and excited to get Anthony back. He is such a versatile scorer, and makes our team that much deeper.”

Roberts, who had been suffering from recurring migrane headaches, is being treated  by Anita Wu, M.D., the Hospital for Special Surgery’s Director of Neurology. Roberts had been bothered by the migranes since the Red Storm’s September 5 game against the University of Montreal in Canada, when he suffered a concussion, but testing has not determined that the migranes came as a result of the injury.

Roberts has appeared in four games this season, below the NCAA-mandated participation requirement of 30 percent or less of the team’s games.

D.J. Kennedy, a normal starter for the Johnnies came off the bench to add six rebounds for the Johnnies.

In his first appearance this season, Rob Thomas scored three points in five minutes of play.

On the first play of Saturday’s 80-71 loss at Duke, junior forward Justin Burrell twisted his ankle after making a jumpshot.

He was helped to the bench and later tried to return, but upon limping up and down the floor was brought to the locker room and did not return thereafter.

Burrell was evaluated Monday by team physician Answorth Allen, M.D. Though x-rays were negative, his injury was ruled a high ankle sprain, and he is expected to miss three weeks. He will be re-examined in two weeks.
