I wanted to keep a running diary of the 2009 lacrosse National Championship game, because I did watch the game, but I got a bit sidetracked with some of the other major news of the day (see posts below.)

Syracuse trailed Cornell 9-6 with 5:31 remaining in the fourth quarter and tied it up with 4.5 seconds left on a goal by Kenny Nims, who would eventually be named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Cody Jamieson, who tallied just nine goals on the year for the Orange, scored his second goal of the day just 80 seconds into the overtime period to give Syracuse back-to-back National Championships and ten in the program’s history.

Updating previous reports, John Marinatto has officially been named the latest Big East commissioner.  His term will begin on July 1, 2009.

He will be succeeding current commissioner Mike Tranghese, who has held the position for the past 19 years.  Tranghese announced his plans to retire in June of this year.

Marinatto, who has served as the senior associate commissioner of the conference since 2002, was appointed via unanimous vote of the league’s Chancellors and Presidents.

As senior associate, Marinatto has served as the Big East’s Chief Operating Officer and was responsible for the administration of the conference office.

Before working for the conference, Marinatto was the athletic director at Providence for 14 years.
