Red Storm in Final Four

Posted by Bill San Antonio

First off, no, not that final four.

Nelson Becerra’s game-winning goal on a penalty kick in overtime propelled No. 3 St. John’s to a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Indiana Saturday evening at Belson Stadium, sending the team to the Final Four of College Cup 2008 in Frisco, Texas. The Storm came back from two goals down with under 10 minutes to play in the second half to send the game to overtime on goals by Joel Gustaffson and Sverre Wegge Gundhus. Ofori Sarkode (36th minute) and Eric Alexander (72nd minute) each contributed goals for Indiana.

Four teams have advanced to the College Cup and will play off in hopes of a National Championship. No. 13 North Carolina defeated Northwestern 1-0 on Saturday, and No. 1 Wake Forest blanked No. 8 South Florida 5-0. Also on Saturday, No. 2 Maryland shutout No. 7 Creighton in College Park, Md. St. John’s will take on Maryland when tournament action picks up Friday, December 12th from Pizza Hut Park. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and ESPNU.
